ZENN Electric Car Generates Buzz In Canada

by GK on December 30, 2007

The ZENN Motor Company builds 100% electric cars right here in Canada.

It has a manufacturing facility in St. Jérome Quebec.

The company has been selling cars in the US for the last eighteen months but only received approval to sell the electric cars in Canada in early November. To date you can only buy them in British Columbia. It appears the company has been bogged down by Canadian bureaucracy.

According to the Rick Mercer video below, you reduce your carbon imprint by six tonnes per year if you drive an electric car.

You have to wonder why such a car has been held up in Canada?

They’re held up for good reasons. These aren’t so much cars (like say, the EV1) as electric golf carts with turn signals.

Their top speed is 40kph. Here in Winnipeg you can’t get from one part of town to another without going on a 60kph street. (And most people go 10% over that.) During rush hour, they’d cause accidents as people try to get around them. They’d make Hummer owners look considerate.

The reason for the 40kph limit is that they don’t have the safety and crash test requirements of a real car. They should never be put on the road with full-sized vehicles running at higher speeds.

Does this car fit 2 or 4 persons?

We live in Victoria BC, where can we view this auto and are you looking for distributors in our Province?

Thanks Bryan

Hey Bryan

I would suggest you visit the company website

I’m not sure if they are looking for distributors. I think the car is a two seater.

Is Winnipeg the only city in the country? No, of course not. I’m originally from Winnipeg and I know all about what the traffic is like there. Just because they might not be perfect for Winnipeg driving right now, doesn’t mean they should be banned for all of Canada. Toronto, where I’m living right now, Montreal, Vancouver and even smaller communities like Victoria have driving conditions that would be perfect for these cars. On top of that Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver all have serious air pollution problems that kill alot of people each year. So I hope you can see it well enough from this perspective to support this Canadian company that is providing a made in Canada solution for certain cities problems. (Not to mention manufacturing jobs that our economy desperately needs in an expanding market)

A guy from the Quebec Department of Transportation test drove the ZENN for two weeks in Montreal and found it quite impressive. Here’s the link: http://www.qc.ec.gc.ca/dpe/travelalternatively/dpe_main_en.asp?air_emp_Bulletin_3_dec_01

If government had any balls they would lower the speed limit. this would reduce death on the road. no car is designed for safty, crash any car at a speed over 40 and see what it looks like. what is YOUR hurry?
We all need to slow down and think of the future. solar electric, solar paint and panels, motion that charges the battery while you drive is the future. wake up and smell the air. Be brave and aquire one. If everyone else was doing it, so would you. Think outside the box for a change.
