Brian Peckford and Come From Aways

by GK on November 26, 2007

Hello from St. John’s.

On the drive into “Sin Jons” today, I heard Ed Hollett on the VOCM open line show. I’m assuming it was the same Ed Hollett from the Sir Robert Bond Papers.

Ed was commenting on the remarks made by two provincial ministers (Tom Marshall and Kevin O’Brien) who appeared on the open line show before him. Both ministers were putting the provincial spin on comments made by former Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Brian Peckford regarding the Atlantic Accord and the state of the fisheries in the province.

Both ministers, and to a certain degree the open line show host Randy Simms, were basically saying that Peckford had no business commenting on issues in the province today simply because he no longer lived here.

This is plain wrong.

Regardless if you agree or disagree with Ed Hollett, Randy Simms or former Premier Peckford, we cannot condemn one persons opinion simply because they no longer live in the province. This is short sighted and not in the best interest of the province. We cannot continue to do this. We must look for the best ideas, regardless of where they come from.

I’m always amazed by the opinions of certain individuals who live in Newfoundland and Labrador that people from outside of our province cannot understand our issues just because they do not live here.
